I often hear people use what I call “collectivespeak”. In essence, it consists of statements that attempt to include others into one’s view of the world. It is a form of generalization. It’s easy to do and I’ve done it myself. Here is one that bugs me the most:
“We must support our troops.”
I take particular exception to this one since I do not have any “troops”. I take no responsibility for the actions of others – especially if they are hired killers who act as aggressors and are funded with stolen property (e.g. taxes).
Instead, I propose the following:
I will do my best to speak for myself. Will you extend me the same courtesy?
